Local Chess Federation To Host December 13 Online Tournament

The Saint Lucia Chess Federation (SLCF) says plans are progressing as the Federation gets ready to host its final chess tournament for the year this National Day (Sunday, December 13).

Andy Alexander, President, Saint Lucia Chess Federation (SLCF), says the all-day tournament – billed as the National Online Chess Bouillon — will start at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, with 10 minutes per player games and Swiss system 6 rounds.

Live commentary will be available on the Federation’s Facebook and the players’ moves will be shown on-screen. The winner gets $400, second place $200, and third place $100. “While we will continue to host tournaments throughout the year, we’re hoping to establish December 13 as a date on which to host a national chess tournament annually,” Alexander said.

The Federation usually assists the National Community Foundation (NCF) in hosting the annual schools chess tournament in July. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing schools to close, that tournament could not be hosted this year. The Federation decided to host the December tournament and open the competition to people of all ages.

Alexander said that, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced into play health and safety protocols such as physical distancing, most chess tournaments are now being hosted online globally.

Meanwhile, the SLCF is calling on corporate Saint Lucia to throw their support behind the tournament in terms of sponsorship.
