Fourth Annual Windward Island Debating Competition

PRESS RELEASE — STUDENTS from Community Colleges in the Windward Islands will debate issues of climate change, cannabis and youth involvement in politics at the annual Windward Island Debating Competition (WIDC) scheduled from 5th to 7th March in Dominica.

The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is represented by the following Team of eight (8) students, from its Debate Society: Nysa Pierre, Skye Glasgow, Brandon Gideon, Sephra Serieux, Kayla Ernest, Hunter Gaillard, Shaquain Longville, and Michael Blasse.

Over the last few months the students have been researching and preparing twelve arguments in preparation for two rounds of debate on the following topics:

Semi Final Rounds
• It is the Responsibility of the Youth to lead in Climate Change Action
• The Medical Use of Cannabis is in Danger of Becoming Another Ploy of the Pharmaceutical Industry

Final Round
• The Lack of Youth Involvement in Local Politics is as a direct result of the Political Culture in the Region

The other three participating colleges are the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Dominica State College and the T. A. Marryshow Community College, representing Grenada. The main aim of the WIDC is to reinforce the multidisciplinary approach which is needed to assess the needs of Caribbean societies and nurture critical thinkers who will help shape the democratic societies of the Caribbean region. It will also serve to promote regional integration, collegial information sharing and cultural exchanges.

It will also be streamed on the Facebook page and YouTube Channels of the Dominica State College.

The event began on Friday, 6th March at 9:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony. The two semi-final debates will follow. The finals will take place on Saturday, 7th March from 9:00 a.m.
