GROS Islet, Mabouya Valley, Vieux Fort South and defending champions Marchand have all booked their tickets to the semifinal round of the 2019 Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc Island Cup tournament when the final preliminary match was played this past weekend at the Marchand Grounds.
On Saturday evening in a double header, defending champion Marchand secured their semifinal spot with a hard fought and exciting 3 – 3 draw over a determined Roseau Valley team.
Minutes into the first half Roseau Valley was presented with the opportunity to surge ahead via the penalty spot but the resultant penalty was kicked straight to the goal keeper. They were made to pay for this mishap as Kershane Sealy put Marchand into the lead in the 9th minute. It was soon 2 – 0 as JannaieLesmond scored in the 15th minute.
Roseau Valley was able to reduce the deficit through a goal by Brendon Modeste in the 30th minute as the half ended 2 – 1.
On the resumption of play Marchand sought to consolidate their position with another goal by Kershane Sealy in the 65th minute to lead 3 – 1.
However, the Roseau Valley team had other ideas as they responded with two quick goals by Doneal Lionel in the 70th minute and Brendon Modeste in the 71st minute to salvage a well-earned draw.
Also on the same day, Central Castries eventually got on the points table with a comprehensive 5 – 1 victory against Canaries. The halftime score 4 – 1.
For Central Castries, the goal scorers were Emery Edward with a hat trick in the 15th, 28th and 71st minutes, with the other two goals coming from Jason Similien in the 24th minute and Wilson Charlemagne in the 42nd minute.
For Canaries, the lone goal was scored by Donavan Jn. Baptiste in the 44th minute.
On Sunday 8th, the rescheduled game between Mabouya Valley and Dennery was played at the Marchand Grounds. In that encounter Mabouya Valley was able to jump to second place on the leader board with a hard fought 2 – 1 victory.
For Mabouya Valley, the goal scorers were Eddie St. Claire in the 38th minute and Vernon Abbott in the 85th minute.
Jamie Prospere scored for Dennery in the 69th minute.
The final points table, Gros Islet – 16 points; Mabouya Valley – 15 points; Vieux Fort South – 13 points and Marchand – 13 points.
