The School of Art and Design in Saint Lucia will host their annual Summer Art Programme at their new location in Marisule this year. The programme has existed for approximately eight years with its inception in 2011, when the school first opened its doors. The School of Art and Design has hosted the Art Programme at the University of the Southern Caribbean Saint Lucia Campus for the past two years. This year however, the school is working on their new structure with hopes of hosting the programme there.
The Summer Art Programme seeks to attract students aged five to sixteen years with an artistic ability or interest in art and design. The programme is filled with artistic and creative activities over a three week period. This year the initiative will run from July 22nd to August 9th, Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm and will include drawing, fiber and decorative arts, ceramics and other artistic areas. Students also get to attend at least two field trips to artists’ studios, galleries or manufacturing and other businesses related to general art, design, innovation and product design. In the past, the programme culminated with an exhibition and an auction to showcase the student’s work as well as to raise funds for the continuation of the programme. Although this aspect was suspended for the past two years, the school plans to reintroduce it this year and moving forward.
The new location is easily accessible in Marisule, just after the bus stop across from the Windward Island Gases gap on the hill. Shuttle service will be available from Castries. The shuttle fee is separate from the registration fee and will begin on July 22nd. Students will be picked up at 8:30am in front the Ministry of Education building on the Waterfront, and will be dropped off in the same location at the end of each day of the programme. Persons interested in registering students or who require further information can call 758-285-6751.
