TRINIDAD carnival seems to creep on unsuspecting Soca lovers every year. One minute, you’re planning on going, and the next, you’re watching other people take to the streets in full carnival spendour in one of those dazzling costumes you’d been eying. This year more than a handful of Saint Lucians were part of the fun, along with carnival fanatics from all over the world. Trinidad is known to be the hub of carnival in the Caribbean, and in 2019 the event once again lived up to the hype.

The Voice has learned that one of our own walked away with one of the top prizes at the Groovy Soca Monarch Competition. Tennyson John placed second in that competition with the song ‘Vent’, only outdone by Trinidad’s Swappi with ‘Party Start’. V’ghn from Grenada came third with ‘Trouble in the Morning’.

The Power Soca category was dominated by Grenada and Trinidad, with the winner being none other than Grenada’s Mr Killa with ‘Run With It.’ By all accounts, Trinidad carnival was not one to be missed this year. This year’s carnival was topped off with an exciting collaboration featuring Machel Montano and R&B sensation Ashanti, with a hit song call ‘The Road.’ If that isn’t the best way to end an epic event, then who knows what is!
