THE Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) says it remains concerned that there is still work to be done to improve the transparency of the political process and to create a society that is more respectful of freedom of expression in the Caribbean.
The regional media body observed world Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, 2018.
This yearās observances are being held under the theme āKeeping power in check: media, justice and the rule of law.ā
President Anika Kentish says it focuses on the mediaās role in establishing justice, promoting transparency and strengthening democracy.
The veteran journalist is urging regional governments to remove laws that impede freedom of expression.
She also wants those in power to lift restrictions on access to information and to take measures to ensure that journalists can work without fear of prosecution.
Kentish says while the ACM is proud of its achievements, members are aware that there is still a lot of work to be done.
She says with the support of international partners, the association will continue to expand its scope and fulfil its mission as advocates of press freedom.
