The children of one San Soucis nursery/preschool have blessed the lives of a family in need in their own special way for the Christmas season.
The seven-member Black family of La Clery who lost their four bedroom home and all their belongings as a result of a ferocious fire on November 5, was this year’s chosen recipients for the annual hamper giveaway by the children and staff of Kiddies Head Start.
With the help of parents and guardians, students of the school donated two basketsful of items ranging from non-perishable foods to toiletries and everyday needs.
Head of the family, David Black said this was the last place that he would ever expect to receive such blessings from.
Black said the donation was extra special to him and his family: “They say when kids bless you, you get a divine blessing so I’m really pleased about all of this. It makes me happy to think that the kids and their parents could have thought of my family in a situation like that.”
Black said since the fire, the response and help that his family has received was something very familiar to him.
Charity, he said, has always been part of his family’s culture and so he feels that the overwhelming support is good karma coming back to him ten-fold.
He said: “That’s how I grew up. I grew up in a very charitable family. When I was small, my mother used to take us all the way down to Soufriere to feed people. My father and his brother used to feed people right in front of the Town Hall. We’re a very charitable family and it makes us happy to give so that’s how it’s coming back to us now.”
Administrator of the school, Lucy Joseph said it was a joy to hold such an activity as this was the time of year that Kiddies Head Start gets to bless the less fortunate including students from the Morne du Don and Gordon and Walcott Methodist schools as well as the Marian Home.
Joseph said: “At this time of year when we do a lot of sharing and giving, we thought that we should identify the fire victims to present our hampers to.”
Joseph sent out a special thank you to the parents of the children who made the generous donations. The response was so overwhelming that there were products left over which will be donated to another charity.
