SENIOR Elite Boxer Welterweight Lyndell “the Russian” Marcellin and teenage school boy Light welterweight Nathan Ferrari have been named Senior and Junior “Boxers of the year” respectively by the St. Lucia Boxing Association.
Marcellin, although not having a great year was still able to get the nod over the other elite senior boxers who were on show for St. Lucia during the years.
Marcellin won gold at the OECS championships at the end of May in Grenada where he was also named Boxer of the tournament. He was also a gold medallist at the 2015 Creole championships in Martinique. He ended 2015 at the Caribbean Development Boxing championships in Guyana with a Bronze medal. He also took part in the Pan American Boxing qualifiers in Mexico.
Honourable mention for 2015 in the Elite senior category was made of Middleweight Arthur Langelier and Marvin Anthony who floated between Middleweight and Light heavyweight through the year. Langelier won gold at the championships and silver at the OECS Boxing championships. He took part in the Pan American qualifiers in Mexico and did not medal at the Caribbean Development championships in Guyana where he suffered a controversial loss. Anthony won Gold at the OECS championships and Silver at the Caribbean Development Boxing championships in Guyana.
Ferrari a 17 year old Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School student made his debut in the sport this year and has impressed all who have seen him.
He won a gold medal at the Creole championships in Martinique and lost a very close bout to an opponent from Guyana at the Caribbean Development championships which were held in Guyana at the end of November.
Honourable mentioned in the junior division was Kareem Boyce, a Sir Ira Simmons secondary school student who also made his debut this year. He won a silver medal at the Creole championships and at the Caribbean Development championships in Guyana.
