DENOUNCING the current government’s performance and calling for fresh general elections were among the main themes at the United Workers Party’s protest march held last Thursday afternoon.

The march began around 5:15 p.m. near the Red Cross building at Vigie with scores of protesters carrying placards and chanting “Enough is enough” while making their way down John Compton Highway en route to the city centre.

Calypsonian Lady Leen’s “We Want Jobs” blared from the music system set up on the truck accompanying the protesters, many of whom donned the UWP’s traditional yellow and calling for the end of “En Rouge”.

One protester told The VOICE that Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony’s stewardship was no longer needed.

“We don’t want Kenny,” she said. “We want him to go. That’s why we’re marching to get him out.”

A second said the Prime Minister has not kept his word: “He promised to inject $100 million into the economy. Up to now we haven’t seen it.”

A third said that high cost of living prompted her to join the protest march: “I’m working and I’m not seeing where the money is going. The price of everything is high and I cannot pay my bills.”

In an interview with The VOICE as the protest march began, Castries South East MP, Guy Joseph, said he was impressed by the number of people who showed up to support the UWP event. He chastised the government for not alleviating the citizenry’s plight.

“It’s a clear indication that the people of Saint Lucia are ready to tell this government that they’ve had enough of the bad management policies,” Joseph said. “It’s clear to us in Saint Lucia today that people are suffering and the government is paying no attention to what is happening.”

Joseph issued a stern warning to the incumbent, saying that should the government not do what it should, the UWP will have no choice but to take the protest to another level.

“We may have to picket outside the Prime Minister’s office, the Parliament building and in different areas where the government will have to pay attention,” Joseph warned. “Where we are today, Saint Lucians have never seen so much misery in their lives as they are seeing under this Labour administration. It’s like the government could not care less.”

Joseph said the Prime Minister and his Cabinet are out of touch with the realities being faced by Saint Lucians trying to make ends meet. He added that the economic situation in the country had become dire enough to warrant immediate fresh elections.

“Dr. Anthony has proven that he cannot do anything to make this economy better. All he has done over the years is to borrow,” Joseph told The VOICE.

When questioned about the UWP’s internal wrangling that has led to some of its members being either expelled or breaking ranks, Joseph told The VOICE that despite the party’s internal issues, it can still do a better job than the sitting government.

“I would rather that we have rancour in the UWP and that (people) have a different perspective than to have a one-track mind as we have there and all we see is misery… But it is clear to me that the UWP is a much better alternative than the Labour Party. Even in its present form, we can far outperform the Labour government,” Joseph explained.

Sarah Flood-Beaubrun was among the protesters last Thursday. She told The VOICE that it was important that people voiced their discontent with the government.

“Things are hard in Saint Lucia, things are critical and crucial. So people need to express that. We need to let the government know that enough is enough and we need a better life in Saint Lucia. The Kenny Anthony government has failed to provide jobs for the people of Saint Lucia, has failed to control crime, and has failed to protect children. These are very serious issues and we need to let the government know that,” Flood-Beaubrun explained.

Her participation in the march had some initial hiccups: some protesters made it clear that Allen Chastanet was their candidate for the November 15 party convention for which Flood-Beaubrun and Chastanet are candidates for political leader. Nevertheless, Flood-Beaubrun said her participation in the march was vital.

“It’s the right thing to do (because) I’ve just come into the party. Other figures have had very sad experiences that have been very hurtful. So I would not necessarily criticize them for not coming. It has been a very tough journey for them,” Flood-Beaubrun stated.

She added: “I have come into the party seeking to unify it and it is important that we demonstrate that we’re serious about that.”

About a dozen speakers addressed the hundreds gathered in William Peter Boulevard for the three-hour-long meeting held there. The theme was common: getting the government out.

The last speaker, Chastanet, chided the government for not doing enough to ameliorate the hardships being faced by many Saint Lucians. He said the government had failed to create jobs for many people, blaming the current administration for high unemployment, especially among the youth. The time for Labour to relinquish power, he said, had come.

“We have the highest unemployment (rate) in the Caribbean”, the UWP leader said. “One out of every two young people in our country is unemployed. We have young people who have graduated and cannot even get a job interview.”

Chastanet also dared the Prime Minister to announce the date for the next general elections by next Monday, urging supporters to go out and vote on elections day.

“We are tired of you saying how divided the United Workers Party is,” Chastanet said. “If we are so divided, call the elections. If you think the United Workers Party is divided, call the elections. We are ready.”

Stan Bishop began his career in journalism in March 2008 writing freelance for The VOICE newspaper for six weeks before being hired as a part-time journalist there when one of the company’s journalists was overseas on assignment.

Although he was initially told that the job would last only two weeks, he was able to demonstrate such high quality work that the company offered him a permanent job before that fortnight was over. Read full bio...

  1. There are two things in this article that is worthy of comment the title of the article itself and Guy’s assertion that a discombobulated UWP can do a better job at managing the economy that the current administration. Granted Kenny sucks at economic management but to tell the people of Saint Lucia that it would be in their best interest to vote for a dysfunctional government is so absurd that it can only make sense to Guy the Master of Absurdity.
Secondly the only reason that Chastanet is calling for elections is because he’s had enough and he wants to bail out of elective politics so he wants to roll the dice to see if he’ll come up trumps by a fluke of nature. Once he and the “U”WP have been soundly rejected at the upcoming polls he’ll be convinced that he’s not cut for the job but he’ll surely be gleeful that he’ll take many of his cohorts down with him.
He’s just desperately looking for an out. However, a licking from Sarah would put him out of his misery but he has locked up most of the delegates. The problem for Sarah is that the anti-Chastanet will not go all out to influence the delegates because of the creole saying ‘wahvet par vlay banan may e par vlay poulle becktay e.”

If elections are due, constitutionally, next year; I don’t see the point of a hurried election this year.
One more year of Kennynomics ain’t gonna kill us.

  6. It is self-evident that many Lucians suffer from the psychological disorder of the Inferiority Complex caused by the after-effects of Chattel Slavery and the continued worship of a Naked White man as their God.

The worship of a white man as God, relegates the Negro Lucian to the status of an inferior creation where he or she perceives Caucasians as their masters, and all Chabeens as beautiful, while perceiving their own Black selves as ugly and inadequate, prompting the Negro victims like Peter Josie and Ricky John Wayne to advocate the expulsion of chocolate colored Lucian women from being Carnival Queens, as can be seen with the despicable behaviour in this video where John Wayne the Naked Stripper, calls black people “THINGS and BLOBS” and every derogatory names imaginable:

This is the controlling mindset that exist and has contaminated the delegates of the UWP, where self-hating Negroes like Josie, Fedee, and Ezekiel, along with a cabal of retrograde self-hating Negroes like Claudius Preville, Guy Joseph, and deceitful Lajables Mary Isaac reign in this cesspool under the leadership of the Arch Deceiver, Satan Allen Chastanet with his aficionados. That these bunch of disgraceful Negroes could conjure up the nerve to present the ignorant nincompoop Allen as a Leader of a people whose language he does not understand is the heights of insults to the thousands of Lucians who are best able to express themselves in Kweyol, and the rest of us who love our cultural heritage. Yet these retrograde Negroes like Fedee tell us our people and culture are insignificant.

Then to add insult to injury they have resurrected another self hating Negress Sarah Flood-Beaubrun from Choc Cemetery ?

  7. S.O.M. I new you were sick, but now I’m more than convinced, you are a very sick individual.
You need psychiatric treatment and I doubt there are Shrinks in St.Lucia dealing directly
with your kind of behavior, and it is troubling.

I truly understand the reason for your residing in the Iron Age, and your inability to encompass the reason the real insane people in the UWP will do whatever it takes to have a Caucasian as their Master, even though the image of your God cannot communicate nor understand an enormous percentage of the population of St. Lucia. But of course, these Black people who are best able to converse in Kweyol are of no consequence and disposable, because there are enough brain-damaged Negroes like yourself who are “good’ subjects of the White Queen.

To understand the power of White Supremacy Christianity, it is helpful to understand a bit about the structure of the human mind. Much of our mental activity has little to do with rationality, and is utterly inaccessible to the conscious mind. The preferences, intentions and decisions that shape our lives are in turn shaped by memories and associations that can get laid down before we even develop the capacity for rational analysis, since it is established in our subconscious mind.

Our minds begin the learning process immediately at birth; the ambient temperature, the lighting and darkness, the images of the white God on the wall, and colors affect us as infants subliminally. Aspects of cognition like these determine how we go through life, what causes us distress, which goals we pursue and which we abandon, how we respond to failure, how we respond when other people hurt us—and how we respond when we hurt them. Christianity derives its power in large part because it shapes these unconscious processes: the frames, metaphors, intuitions and emotions that operate before we even have a chance at conscious thought.

This video of an experiment shows how our little African babies are conditioned to hate themselves, even before they are able to develop the capacity for rational analysis. It is in this way men are taught to hate the women, and is the root of Domestic Violence, since we are taught that it was the woman Eve who caused the man Adam to disobey God and the reason we were kicked out of Paradise. Yet, women are the largest percentage of the congregants in these Churches of white supremacy.

your whole miserable life in a so called black world; time to wake up man
I don’t know through what prism you see things, but you would send any

about it drives me crazy. I believe in miracles, and maybe JESUS can help.

  10. ……….”the rest of us who love our cultural heritage”……what’s that?….and where the hell is Elmo?!.
