UWI Speak – J’ca Honours for Four Academics

FOUR members of The UWI, Mona community were named among recipients of National Honours and Awards, with effect from Independence Day, August 6, 2014. Among them were two Saint Lucian academics, Professor Fitzroy Augier and Professor Joseph Frederick who have each distinguished themselves in their respective fields

The awards were presented at the annual National Honours and Awards Ceremony held at King’s House earlier this year.

The Order of Jamaica (OJ), the country’s fifth highest honour was conferred on Director of the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit, Professor Joseph Frederick, for distinguished service to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, and The University Hospital of the West Indies, in particular for research conducted in assisted reproduction.

Former Pro Vice Chancellor and noted historian, Professor Fitzroy (Roy) Augier was appointed an honorary member of the Order of Jamaica for over fifty years of distinguished service to Academia, in particular Caribbean History.

UWI, Mona Principal, Professor Archibald McDonald, was one of two persons to be appointed as Member of the Order of Distinction – in the rank of Commander (CD) – for his long and distinguished contribution to Academia and Medicine. The other person named was Professor Rupert Lewis, for outstanding contribution to the study of Caribbean and Pan African Political Thought.

National Honours and Awards are presented to recognize individuals who by their service and contribution have had a meaningful and significant impact on national life. Orders are used to recognize merit in terms of achievement and service.

The University community congratulates the recipients on this tremendous achievement which acknowledges their years of outstanding and dedicated service, in keeping with the institution’s mission to propel the economic, social, political and cultural development of the society through teaching, research, innovation, community service and intellectual leadership.
