Honouring the Memory of Sir Arthur Lewis with Innovative Thought Festival

UNTHINK – a thought festival on globalisation and sustainable development will be hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College on June 15, 2021 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the passing of Sir William Arthur Lewis.  The theme for the inaugural festival is “Critical Perspectives on Globalization and Sustainable Development in a Post-Pandemic World”.

The one-day virtual affair involving keynote speakers, panels and interactive audience participation aims to promote new thinking, explore exciting ideas and strategic actions for the development agenda.

Dr. Hyginus Leon, recently installed as the sixth President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), will be the first keynote speaker for the Festival which begins at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Leon, a Saint Lucian national, has over 30 years’ experience in economic development and follows in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Lewis who was the first president of the CDB. https://www.salcc.edu.lc/unthink/unthink.php#Speakers

The second keynote presentation for the Festival will be at 12:00 noon and will be delivered by world renowned Economist and Author Dr. Ha-Joon Chang, author of 16 books and Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge.

Globally recognized scholars, social activists and innovators will discuss five key topics of global and regional significance:

• Caribbean Futures

• Climate Action

• Fourth Industrial Revolution

• Creative Futures

• Youth and Social Entrepreneurship

The Festival will be broadcast live on HTS and live-streamed on the College’s social media pages. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a special Youth Panel at 8:00 p.m. on Youth and Social Entrepreneurship. Sir William Arthur Lewis is globally recognized for his iconic contribution to development economics. Lewis can be described as one of the few economic historians and theorists that analyses turning points in global development.

The Thought Festival will be held annually in honour of the memory and work of Sir Arthur Lewis.
