Tight Finish In Grow Well’s Schools Quiz

IT was a finish for the story books. Three of the six teams from the Gros Islet District tied and there was a double playoff after two teams tied again. When the dust settled on this exhausting competition among amazingly bright primary school children, the results were: 1st place– Bonne Terre Preparatory –a first time winner in this 13-year old competition; 2nd. –Grande Riviere Combined, and 3rd.– Montessori Centre.

Grow Well went all out for this important educational competition which is an annual event and a major highlight for Gros Islet’s primary pchools in Grow Well’s 20th anniversary year of service to youth in the community.

Outstanding prizes excited the crowd of 150 invited schoolchildren, principals, teachers, parents, government officials and Grow Well supporters in the elegant VIP lounge of the Beausejour Players Pavilion at the Stadium. Prizes included Samsung tablets, Kindle Fire HD tablets and e-readers, smartphones and vouchers for two or four persons for fun tours and movies.

The major sponsor was the Rotary Club of Gros Islet, and other much appreciated sponsors included Caribbean Cinemas, Digicel, Lime, Rainforest Skyrides, Segway Tours and Therold Prudent. Last year’s top winners, again after a nail-biting playoff, were Dame PearletteLouisy Primary and Gros Islet Primary.

Teachers hooted with delight as Gabrielle McGowan and Darnia Bernard won second place with 2 Kindle Fire HDs. The girls tried to contain their joy but rushed to school friends to show off their magnificent tablets.

District Education Officer Evarist John addressed the excited crowd and applauded Grow Well’s outstanding contribution to education in Gros Islet. Media anchor KensonCasimir, a long-time Grow Well supporter, was a popular quiz master. Grow Well President Paul Lorde, in congratulating winners, reminded all who attended of the upcoming Young Authors competition and urged Gros Islet schoolchildren to participate by submitting short stories on the general theme of giving, sharing, helping others and volunteering.
