PRESS RELEASE – A masquerade dance parade along with solo drumming and performances by national artistes were amongst the highlights of the official launch of Saturday City Night on Saturday, December 9.
Conceptualized by Castries Mayor, Peterson Francis, and his team within the Office of the Mayor, Saturday City Night showcased the rich cultural elements of the island.
Speaking at the launch of the event, Minister responsible for Local Government and Culture, Fortuna Belrose, applauded the organizers and vowed to continue supporting the initiative.
The free family-oriented event transformed lower John Compton Highway (between the Vendors’ Arcade and the Craft Market) into a vibrant scene abuzz with excitement from 7:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.
Francis said the celebration marked the official start of the revitalization of Castries.
“We are not just presenting a street party or another fete,” he said. “Saturday City Night is about cultural artistry along with diversity in the cuisine offerings by all vendors.”
He added: “I wish to thank everyone who came and supported the event, all my staff who volunteered their time, and to the organizing committee. We’re encouraging residents and visitors to continue supporting Saturday City Night. It is a celebration of Castries, a celebration of a new city and the re-development to take place. It is also about generating economic sustainability with options for all ages and interests.”
