EXCITING Rugby action returns to the Gros Islet playing field this afternoon when the St. Lucia Rugby Football Union hosts Team Diamante from Martinique in a 15 per side all male encounter from 4:00 p.m.
Public Relations Officer of the St. Lucia Rugby Football Union, Vonette Victor told THE VOICE, that it is the fifth time the two teams will be playing each other in a friendly atmosphere, but the Martiniquan’s have in the past outclassed the local team currently leading the series 4 – 1.
Victor said with the recently held local tournament that was played over an eight week period, she believes the final squad selected to represent St. Lucia is all ready. They are physically fit and mentally prepared and will give the visitors a good run, she promised.
Based on previous encounters between the two teams and the ColDu Cup at stake, Diamante will start as favourite; but with the experience of Jerry Charles, the lightning speed of Lenford Eugene, the consistency of Ron Eugene, the twin brothers of Ervin and Elvin Joseph and Roger Butcher, St. Lucia has a very good chance of cutting the deficit.
The full St. Lucia squad reads – Jerry Charles (captain), Imran Williams, Lenford Eugene, Ervin and Elvin Joseph, Leroy Lascaris, Beckham Louis, Wedrel St. Claire, Alex Brown, Jason Dwayne, Roger Butcher, Nyhymn Terrence, Yohan Henry, Ron Eugene, Junior Joseph, Kamal Lawrence, Najsm Cox, Kevin Joseph and Flavien Gabriel.
The ColDu Cup, is named after St. Lucia’ Colvis Samuels and Frenchman Jean Pierre Dulac for their sterling contributions to the sport of Rugby.
