This academic year 2026/2027 marks just under two decades of a solid contribution to education by the Saint Lucia Workers Credit Union. What this means is that nine students, all children of members of this Credit Union, and top performers in their own right, have been granted scholarships at the secondary school level to continue their education upon the reopening of schools this September.
Under the theme “Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders”, students, parents and representatives of the Credit Union came together to share thoughts and ideas on moving forward and upward.
Guest speaker Dr. Tersha Flood, in his comments, said, “Leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room or having the most titles. Leadership is about your actions. It is about helping someone who is struggling, standing up for what is right and setting a positive example for others.”
Speaking on behalf of the Credit Union, sitting President Mr. Mitchelson Phillips lamented on the lack of fathers in the crowd celebrating with their children. He appealed directly to parents. “Parents, continue having that relationship with your children. This year, I did not see any fathers with children. I love seeing the men.”
However, he went on to highlight the value of parents, telling the students, “parents are supposed to be your best friends. And if at any one time you cannot go to your parents for advice, there is a problem”. He inspired the students to dream big and to do well, reminding them that they must find opportunities to seek out their parents for help and advice on their journey through school.
In congratulating the winners, Alicia Baptiste, Chair of the Education Committee, said of the experience, “this evening is more than an awards ceremony. It is a celebration of excellence, determination, perseverance and the limitless potential of our nation’s young people”. Nurse Baptiste went on to express her desire that the Credit Union do more in the future, to satisfy the growing need in the community.
One young scholarship recipient, Zayden Joseph, a new student preparing to enter the Leon Hess Secondary School, was pleased that his scholarship meant that he would receive books and other essentials for school.
The Saint Lucia Workers Credit Union, from as early as 2009, has maintained its investment in young people, through the granting of scholarships. The year 2025 was a banner year for students, 15 of whom were recipients of scholarships at the secondary level. Over the last seven years starting in 2020, the Credit Union has, in addition to scholarships, contributed to bursaries, tertiary education scholarships and stipends, all of which have improved the lives of Saint Lucians.
From a modest organization that began in 1982 with 63 members, all vested in growth and financial improvement for people traditionally described as marginalized, The Saint Lucia Workers Credit Union has developed into an economic powerhouse, now servicing over 20,425 member accounts through 42 dedicated staff members. Today the credit union is led by recently appointed General Manager Shermaine Aimable-Bodley, the Saint Lucia Workers Credit Union is looking to a bright future amidst a challenging global environment.
