The Saint Lucia National Youth Council (SLNYC) has expressed deep concern following an incident involving a student and teacher at a local educational institution.
The youth body is calling for a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the matter.
“We remain committed to ensuring that our teachers, likewise our students… remain safe in spaces where young people are nurtured, protected and respected. We also should not deny the fundamental role that teachers play in our lives as it relates to facilitating knowledge beyond academia. However, any alleged form of physical aggression by an educator is unacceptable and undermines the trust placed in our institutions by students, parents and the wider public,” the SLNYC said in a statement.
Equally troubling, the SLYNC said, is the “apparent failure of Ministry officials to fully acknowledge responsibility or demonstrate the level of urgency and accountability that such a grave matter demands.”
“The response to incidents involving student welfare must be transparent, decisive and centered on the rights and dignity of the child,” the SLNYC emphasized.
The organization is calling for:
- Immediate safeguarding measures to protect the affected student, teachers, and others;
- Clear accountability for all parties involved, including appropriate disciplinary action where warranted;
- A public statement from the Ministry outlining concrete steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future;
- Strengthened policies and training for educators on student engagement, conflict resolution, and child protection.

“The well-being of our students is our highest priority, and we deeply value the trust parents place in our schools,” Dieudonne said in a statement last week.
Moreover, she added, upon notification of the incident, the school’s administration initiated standard protocols, including facilitating medical evaluation for the student.
Initial reports indicate that the student was not seriously injured, Dieudonne said.
The department says it remains committed to the physical and psychological well-being of all students and does not condone any form of corporal punishment. “We also recognize the concerns of parents and the community, however, we urge the public to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims or threats against principals, teachers, and other school personnel.
Such actions can compromise the integrity of the investigation and to the privacy rights of those involved.”
