Low Birth Rate And Absenteeism Key Contributing Factors
Education Minister Kenson Casimir has raised alarms over declining class enrollment and increasing student absenteeism in Saint Lucia, stressing the importance of strong school leadership to drive reform and enhance educational outcomes.
The start of the school year is viewed as a pivotal opportunity for renewal and systemic improvement.
Minister Casimir announced the introduction of new programs across schools aimed at tackling the recent decline in student enrollment, as authorities seek to stabilize classroom populations and support the education system. His emphasis on institutional leadership suggests that accountability and engagement are crucial in addressing these challenges.
Potential strategies to combat absenteeism may include community outreach, enhanced teacher-student support systems, and policy adjustments to make education more accessible and relevant.
“This government has been very proactive in response to the declining birth rate in this country. We recognize the need to refocus on different aspects of education in light of these challenges,” he stated during this week’s media briefing.
Minister Casimir also addressed classroom composition, noting that some classes currently accommodate as few as 10 students. He proposed consolidating these students into one class while re-purposing the additional classroom for specialized programs, such as special education and Technical, Vocational, and Education Training (TVET) lessons.
The government’s immediate focus is on students who have faced suspension. “In the past, a ‘troubled child’ would be suspended and sent home for one or two weeks, leaving them essentially on their own,” the minister remarked.
To address this issue, he proposed the establishment of programs within schools experiencing dwindling enrollments to assist these students who require additional support.
“We envision a classroom set up to accommodate a Behavior Modification Counselor who would engage with these students during their suspension to realign them and improve their productivity,” he explained.
Additionally, while the inclusion of a specialized counselor’s services will be discussed in an upcoming parliamentary session, other initiatives are being explored to ensure the welfare of these students is safeguarded.
