Government Approves Key Strategic Actions to Safeguard Saint Lucia’s Food Security Amid Shifting U.S. Trade Policies

In a proactive move to shield Saint Lucia’s food systems from potential disruptions due to shifting trade policies in the United States, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a series of strategic recommendations put forward by the Joint Ministerial Task Force on Trade Policy.

The approvals, stemming from the 4th Joint Meeting of the Task Force to Monitor and Evaluate the Effects of Changes in the Trade Policies of the United States of America on Saint Lucia, signal the government’s strong commitment to food security, agricultural sustainability, and economic resilience.

Among the major initiatives approved are:

  • Independent Feed Study:
The Ministry of Agriculture will urgently commission a comprehensive independent study to assess and compare the nutritional content and integrity of locally produced versus imported animal feed. This measure aims to address growing concerns about feed quality, animal health, and the long-term profitability and well-being of local farmers.
  • 2025–2027 Financing Plan for Food Production:
A detailed financing plan will be developed by the Ministry of Agriculture to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Boosting Food Production over the next three years. The plan is expected to strengthen Saint Lucia’s domestic production capabilities and reduce import dependency.
  • National Food & Nutrition Security Task Force:
A multisectoral task force will be established to draft and implement a National Food & Nutrition Security Policy and Action Plan for 2025–2030. This task force will be chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture and co-chaired by the Ministry of Health, with representation from the Ministries of Commerce, Education, and Equity.
  • Meat Processing Facility Proposal:
The Ministry of Agriculture has been tasked with exploring and designing a proposal for a national meat processing facility, aimed at improving the quality, safety, and availability of local meat products. A proposal is expected to be submitted for Cabinet review by November 30, 2025.
  • Fast-Tracking SPS Legislation:
The Attorney General’s Chambers will accelerate the finalization of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) legislation, a critical step in ensuring food safety and compliance with international standards.

These strategic actions demonstrate the government’s forward-thinking approach in building a robust and self-reliant food system. By improving feed quality, securing targeted investment, enhancing infrastructure, and strengthening policy frameworks, Saint Lucia is poised to protect its food producers and consumers amid evolving global trade dynamics.
