Take my foolish advice!

THERE’S a wise old saying that goes “No man is an island”. Yet, there are several individuals, both here and abroad, who have made significant gestures that have been registered in history. But sometimes it also takes only one person to create change that can enhance mankind.

To this end, I would like to suggest that what we need is not a change of Government, but a new way of governing and dealing with our development and social needs.

The changing of a political party or changing a candidate, will not change the price of coffee.

There are some modules that were tried in the past that failed, but ought to be reviewed and revised because the times have changed.

The three basic needs of most people are education, skills training and job opportunities so they can improve their material needs regardless of how grand.

Many have dropped out, or as we say ‘chicken out’ or ‘given up’ as it relates to personal development, but they too have to be included because some people have means and some have the right contacts, while most don’t know where to start.

So, the government of the day must always have a clear vision how to assist the majority to make it possible that more people are contented through the advent of infrastructure, training opportunities, funding support, guidance and security.

So the earlier concept of governments having a Think Tank — a grouping of individuals whose only purpose is to come up with new and innovative ideals for the purpose of nation building — should be reconsidered.

Monies borrowed, obtained through grants or donation must be spent with progress in mind, not for some selective sector, but for national growth despite age or gender.  Honesty must become the new policy and delivery must take first place when promises are made.

I also believe that the new must be groomed by the elder and the baton must be passed on, only when it’s been ensured that the new representative has proven to have the needed qualities. Government works must be continual despite the party in power. Replacement must be done if one falters, or falls short of the agreed commitment, as no one must or should be favoured based on friendship to the party.

Decisions when made must be first to the benefit of the Islanders and selling of our lands have to be carefully monitored.

Laws must be upheld and persons who transgress must be made to pay, the people must learn to contribute and nothing should be absolutely free.

So, for national progress and growth that will benefit all, there must be a new and different approach to development — political or otherwise.

And for all speaking and seeking political office, we must see and know your track record.; and for those from the past that seek reinstatement, we also must examine your past records.
