Malik Johnny, a former student of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC), has been awarded an aviation scholarship.

The Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation, and Diaspora Affairs, in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), announced the news yesterday.

As a recipient of the highly competitive scholarship, Johnny will pursue training for an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPLA (A)) in Qatar, the Ministry said.

“This programme, funded by the Government of Qatar, aims to enhance the capabilities of developing nations in implementing ICAO’s standards and recommended practices while advancing global aviation safety and development,” the Ministry stated in a press release.

Johnny is one of five individuals worldwide selected for the distinguished award.

“The scholarship aligns with the Government of Saint Lucia’s One University Graduate per Household policy, underscoring the Ministry of External Affairs’ ongoing efforts—under the leadership of the Honorable Alva Baptiste—to collaborate with diplomatic partners in securing educational opportunities for Saint Lucian nationals,” the Ministry said.

The Government of Qatar will cover tuition and accommodation costs for the duration of the training programme, which began on February 10.

The total value of the scholarship is estimated at EC$500,000.

As part of his training, Johnny will receive hands-on experience with various aircraft, including the Airbus A320 or similar models which operate in Saint Lucia via the Hewanorra International Airport.

In support of the initiative, the Government of Saint Lucia, through its University Programme for Advancing Student Success (UNI PASS), have provided an additional EC$10,000 grant to assist with travel and other related expenses.

“The Ministry of External Affairs extends its congratulations to Mr. Malik Johnny and wishes him every success in his studies. We also extend sincere thanks to the Government and people of Qatar as well as the ICAO for their generous intervention and support. This achievement reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to fostering educational and professional development opportunities for Saint Lucian citizens, in alignment with the Government’s broader vision for national advancement,” the Ministry said.
