Despite calls for an early election, Prime Minister Philip J Pierre says there won’t be one anytime soon.
The Prime Minister told reporters on Monday that these requests came from “power hungry” individuals and “no one will ever be able to say to the prime minister… when to call elections.”
“It has never happened before and it won’t happen now,” he said.
He also warned Saint Lucians not to “get carried away by people who refuse to understand that it’s the people’s right to elect the government and it’s the people’s right to remove (them).”
Noting that he will follow constitutional requirements when he announces the next election, Pierre said “So all this disorder and… trying to pretend there is chaos, that will not go anywhere. It will just keep the country back and I am calling on all Saint Lucians to disregard this power-hungry situation.”
In 2021, the prime minister led his party to victory, winning 15 out of 17 seats.
While Saint Lucia doesn’t have fixed election dates, P M Pierre said a constitutional review committee “is looking at the constitution with a parliamentary committee and all these issues are going to come into play.”
“I am not a prime minister who wants to impose, I believe in discussion,” he said.
