The Homecoming celebrations for double Olympic champion Julien “Juju” Alfred were a day of immense pride and joy for Saint Lucians. From early afternoon, fans and supporters gathered outside Hewanorra International Airport (HIA) to welcome the island’s heroine. The anticipation was palpable as the crowd eagerly awaited Julien’s arrival.

Government officials, dignitaries, and guests assembled in the VIP lounge at HIA, where speakers praised Alfred’s achievements. Clivus Jules, Acting Director of Sports and MC for the occasion, declared, “With the heart of a champion and the spirit of a warrior, Julien has captured not only Olympic Gold and Silver but also the hearts of millions around the world.”

Julien delivered a heartfelt and emotional speech, expressing gratitude to those who supported her journey. “So many people have supported me along the way and helped me to get to this point. I just want to say thank you to all of you,” she said. She added, “I have dreamt of this day for such a long time, just being an inspiration to the youth of Saint Lucia, wanting to give back and inspire them so we can have many more Levern Spencers and many more Daren Sammys and many more like myself.”

Julien acknowledged the challenges she faced, stating, “It didn’t come easy …it was truly a rocky road, and I appreciate it.” Prime Minister Philip J Pierre, in awe of the occasion, remarked, “The athletic prowess of our own Julien Alfred, winning Gold and Silver Medals for the 100 meters and 200 meters races at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and the Gold and Silver Medals in the Diamond League, is a reminder that the potential for excellence is very much alive in our country.”

PM Pierre added that Julien’s accomplishments have been a source of inspiration to all Saint Lucians, especially the youth. “Through dedication, hard work, and self-belief, we can be among the best in the world,” he stated.

Youth Development and Sports Minister Kenson Casimir described Julien as the epitome of success, crediting her humility, kindness, and generosity. Julien later exited the VIP lounge and was warmly greeted by a cheerful and supportive crowd before joining the motorcade enroute to Castries and Gros Islet via the East Coast Road.
