United Youth Calls for Urgent Action Against Rising Gun Violence

A youth group calling itself ‘United Youth’ says it is deeply troubled by the alarming increase in gun violence that is claiming the lives of Saint Lucia’s young people. Referring to the senseless murder of 13-year-old Melchizedek Tixcy, at his home, the group that this was a tragic reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence crisis in the country.

“This heart wrenching tragedy has no place in our small nation. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Melchizedek’s family and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The escalating violence is not just a statistic; it represents shattered dreams, grieving families, and a community living in fear,” the group stated in a press release Thursday.

United Youth says it stands in solidarity with all those affected by this epidemic of violence and reiterates its commitment to advocating for the safety and well-being of Saint Lucia’s youth.

Said the group: “We call on the government to stop playing politics with the crime situation. It is time for our leaders to put aside partisan differences and come together with the Opposition to develop sustainable and effective solutions to reduce crime. Our young people deserve to live in a society where they feel safe and supported.”

United Youth urges immediate collaboration and action to implement comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of violence such as investing in education, creating economic opportunities, and enhancing community policing efforts.

“Only through a united front can we hope to create lasting change and protect the future of our nation. We invite all stakeholders, government officials, opposition members, community leaders, and citizens to join us in this critical mission. Together, we can make Saint Lucia a safer place for everyone, especially our Youth,” United Youth noted in its release.
