Sports facilities on the island have been defaced and vandalised, despite that, the Youth Development and Sports Minister Kenson Casimir has revealed a plan to install two advanced gyms to support athletes in honing their skills.

One of these gyms will be situated at the Mindoo Phillip Park , and the other at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

Measures are being put in place to enhance security at these facilities in order to prevent further incidents of theft and vandalism.

“So, we continue to focus on the athlete and ensure that any sort of intervention we have, we do it towards the athlete,” Kenson Casimir told reporters at media briefing Monday.

He added, “We, as a government continue to fortify and we continue to go back in. We’ve hired security companies to mitigate against those break-ins at our facilities.”

The authorities are determined to use moral persuasion to encourage young people to channel their energy and efforts towards positive contributions to the country’s social development.

We are looking into  some significant technology to be placed, especially at our A Standard venues, which will include the DSCG, Soufriere Mini Stadium and the Mindoo Philip Park, to ensure that we can definitely provide better security but we continue to appeal to young people that this is not the right way to go, said the Minister.

Kenson Casimir also acknowledged the talent of young individuals who have excelled in various  sports activities, recognizing the importance of youth development.
