The Honourable John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize and Chairman-in-Office of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), has, in an official statement issued on May 16, announced the two Caribbean candidates for Commonwealth Secretary-General, Senator, the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica and the incumbent Baroness Patricia Scotland. He has said this in a context where “it is still the Caribbean’s turn”.
Johnson Smith’s campaign has been proceeding well since her official launch in London in April and her recent trip to the African continent. Her goals of re-energizing the portfolio to meet the needs of all 54 Member States in an inclusive and visionary way as well as building partnerships for the sustainable development of Member States and their citizens are important pillars on which her campaign stands.
A decision on the appointment of a Secretary-General for the 2022 – 2026 term of office will be made by at the Conference of Heads (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda in the week of June 20, 2022.
