
It was the independence celebration of Mexico that brought a specially invited crowd to the official residence of St. Lucia’s Mexican Ambassador Karla Ornelas in Cap Estate, Gros Islet.
The guest list which included Foreign Minister Alva Baptiste, Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King and Acting Governor General Felix Finisterre also included Venezuelan Ambassador Llieff Escalona and Taiwanese Ambassador Nicole Su and Cuban Ambassador Yenielys Vilma Regueiferos Linares, among others.
The commencement of the evening was launched with a shout out to heroes and heroines of the fight for independence with the first name being that of Father Miguel Hidalgo who sounder the Cry of Delores (Grito de Delores) in 1810. At the event, the Mexican ambassador rang a huge bell which triggered the War of Independence. While Mexico obtained its freedom from Spain in 1821, the independence celebration marks the anniversary of the launch of the War of Independence.

September 16, 2026 marked the 216th anniversary of the beginning of Mexico’s independence movement.
