Saint Lucia’s creative sector is set to experience a significant boost as authorities implement measures to enhance the skills and productivity of the island’s artists, artisans, and craftspeople through an inclusive funding initiative.
The Government of Saint Lucia has begun distributing cheques to 350 approved recipients under the Creative Economy Grant Fund (CEGF) after a year-long waiting period.
This week, the Department of Creative Industries proudly hosted a small group of applicants, marking the beginning of the processing phase for over 1,000 submissions received during the application period.
Calvin Lee, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Department of Creative Industries, Culture, and Heritage, remarked that the introduction of the fund has sparked numerous innovative ideas. He highlighted that funding has been increased to accommodate the diverse range of applicants seeking assistance through the project.
Lee reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the growth of the creative arts sector. At the event, authorities showcased a vibrant promotional display of arts and crafts from local artisans.
Minister of Creative Industries Dr. Ernest Hilaire emphasized the government’s dedication to developing the creative economy and indicated plans to approach the Department of Finance for on-going support. The ceremony followed months of internal groundwork and proposal assessments, leading to a substantial increase in available grant funding from the initial $350,000 to $1.3 million.
The Department of Creative Industries has already disbursed approximately $500,000 to the first cohort of recipients.
Dr. Hilaire acknowledged the challenge of selecting the initial 350 arts and crafts individuals from a pool of over 1,000 applicants but expressed optimism about accommodating more artists as the project progresses. He highlighted the importance of developing a feasible proposal to allocate $1 million annually to support CEGF resources, emphasizing the need to nurture the work of creatives and build a robust entity that will create sustainable livelihoods for local artisans.
Dr. Hilaire also announced plans for a ‘state-of-the-art’ Fashion & Creative Arts Facility, aimed at enhancing productivity within the creative sector.
