Launch of BLUE CAR Initiative in Saint Lucia - Advancing a Sustainable Blue Economy

On September 16, Saint Lucia proudly launched its Sustainable Blue Economy in the Caribbean project, known as BLUECAR.

This pivotal regional initiative, led by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), aims to develop impactful blue economy projects throughout the Caribbean. The event, supported by the Ministry of Economic Development and Youth Economy of Saint Lucia, gathered participants from various government agencies and key stakeholders from the private and financial sectors.

The launch coincided with a validation workshop hosted by GGGI, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable practices.

Key Details of BLUE CAR:

– Sponsorship and Partnership: Implemented by GGGI and funded by the Korea New Green Deal Trust Fund, in collaboration with Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Youth Economy.

– Core Goal: To build a robust pipeline of investment-ready blue economy projects that focus on coastal and marine sustainability, as well as climate resilience.

– Capacity Building: The initiative aims to boost institutional capacity and enhance investor confidence in green and climate finance.

During the validation workshop, participants engaged in an interactive assessment process to prioritize blue economy projects based on their strategic importance, national alignment, potential impact, and readiness for development. This collaborative effort aligns with GGGI’s mission to assist member countries in transitioning towards a green growth economic model.

Additionally, the BLUE CAR initiative includes a commitment to sustainable transport, featuring the introduction of an electric vehicle fleet. The first four electric vehicles were handed over on March 4, 2026, to three government departments, representing a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions and promoting green mobility in the Caribbean.

This project not only supports broader climate resilience goals but also aims to inspire similar sustainable transitions across the region.
