The Msgr. Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre and people of Saint Lucia are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our great pioneering calypsonians, the Mighty Terra who passed on Sunday July 19th after a period of illness. Also known as Blakes, Pancruce McGriffin Theodore is survived by his three children Nadia, Alison and Alderick and their families. He is also leaves to mourn the family of his deceased wife, who was sister to Sir Calixte George, and the Minvielle and Theodore families of Vieux Fort and overseas. From his early years as a teacher, to his years in the public services in Saint Lucia and Canada and in the midst of the early bearers of the calypso art form, The Mighty Terra always displayed warmth affability and humility, always willing to lend a helping hand.
Mighty Terra will be remembered for his prowess as a skill full and prolific calypso composer and arranger during the late nineteen fifties and early sixties. He first organized calypso competitions at his alma mater St. Mary’s College, when he served there as a teacher, and later among the small but growing group of calypsonians at venues such as the Picadilly, Reclamation Grounds, the Havana Club, the Palm Beach Club, the Castries Town Hall and Clarke’s Cinema.
He was a former member of the Big Six Orchestra but later went on to form his own band called the Southern Brothers Orchestra, and was lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. The band performed regularly at community dances in Laborie, Choiseul and Vieux Fort.
Between 1957 and 1963 he captured the national calypso crown seven times, a record which stood for decades before it was eclipsed by the Mighty Pep in 2017. “Terra’s pre-occupation with the politics of the day was inevitable. As a teacher of West Indian history, he also followed the major debates surrounding the move towards self-determination in Saint Lucia and the creation of the West Indies Federation”. His compositions captured the elements of the social and political landscape of Saint Lucia. His winning songs included Rock and Roll Calypso, Jamaica and the Federation, Tribute to Van Geest, Radio Bingo and the Syrian Community.
Former editor of the Voice of Saint Lucia and the Mirror newspapers Guy Ellis, who also wrote on calypso in the island stated that “The Mighty Terra was the pioneer who laid the ground, then later people like Lord Jackson and his sidekick Crusoe who had spent several seasons around the tents is Trinidad, returned home and began to cultivate the calypso plant”.
