Leaving Saint Lucia to pursue higher education is an exciting milestone, but it also means adjusting to a new country, a new campus and, in many ways, a new way of life. For generations of Saint Lucian students at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus, the Saint Lucian Students’ Association (LUSAC), has helped bridge that transition both keeping the island’s spirit alive while building a strong student diaspora in our neighboring island.
As a new academic year approaches, LUSAC is preparing to welcome the newest members of that diaspora with a series of activities designed to help students settle in ahead of the academic year.
The welcome begins on August 8 at the Pigeon Island National Landmark with LUSAC’s Meet and Greet, where incoming students will have the opportunity to meet fellow Saint Lucians, interact with the executive and learn more about university life at Cave Hill in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The celebrations continue on August 15 at the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ Conference Room with a Mas Camp during which members and volunteers will prepare cultural paraphernalia for upcoming exposés on campus.
LUSAC is also actively scouting incoming Saint Lucian students who are interested in becoming part of the association. Whether you’re passionate about culture, community, sports or simply looking for support in a new environment, the association is encouraging students to get involved and help shape the next chapter of the Saint Lucian student community at Cave Hill.
Incoming and returning students can stay connected by following @lusaccavehill on Instagram. Those interested in joining LUSAC or learning more about its activities can also contact President John Tench at 284-1330.
