Saint Lucia’s Julien “Juju” Alfred continued her impressive season, winning the women’s 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest with a time of 10.87 seconds.
This victory reinforces her status as a dominant force in sprinting, particularly after her recent success as an Olympic champion.
Alfred outpaced strong competitors, including Gabby Thomas and Adaejah Hodge, further solidifying her position among the elite sprinters in the world.
Her performance, recording a Season’s Best time of 10.87 seconds (-0.3), not only secured her the win but also showcased her consistency and confidence on the international stage.
Following closely was Jamaica’s Tina Clayton, who finished second in 10.97 seconds, with her compatriot Lyston taking third in 11.01 seconds. The event also spotlighted a fierce rivalry between Alfred and Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah, both stars of the Caribbean contingent competing at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.
Alfred entered the race with momentum, having recently won the women’s 200m at the Monaco Diamond League with a stellar time of 21.51 seconds. For Thompson-Herah, this race marked a significant return to the international competition scene.
In a show of national pride, Saint Lucia’s Sports Minister Kenson Casimir shared in the excitement, stating in an online post, “Another win for Juju!! Saint Lucia stand up!”
On the same day at the Gyulai István Memorial, reigning Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas secured victory in the women’s 200m, clocking in at 21.83 seconds. She finished just ahead of her teammates Kayla White (21.92) and Anavia Battle (22.21). Barbados’ Sada Williams came in fourth with a time of 22.55 seconds as she prepares for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
In addition to the top sprinters, the women’s 400m hurdles featured strong representation from the Caribbean, with Jamaicans Rushell Clayton and Shiann Salmon competing alongside Olympic finalist Jasmine Jones and Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya.
The Gyulai István Memorial was the last event in the 2026 Continental Tour Gold series, just one tier below the World Athletics Diamond League.
The National Athletics Centre in Budapest is set to host this year’s inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in September, promising more thrilling athletic performances.
