Music and arts enthusiasts on the island are determined to establish a robust and dynamic steel pan structure in Saint Lucia that effectively harnesses and nurtures the abundant talent in surrounding communities.
Steel pan groups, along with creative arts and culture personnel, are making a concerted push for greater outreach and recognition of steel pan across the island.
Following another captivating performance at this year’s Panorama at the Sab Playing Field, key stakeholders are advocating for the formation of more steel bands throughout Saint Lucia.
This year’s Panorama featured five competitive bands, showcasing outstanding performances that captivated the audience. Courts Babonneau Steel Orchestra triumphed with their lively rendition of “Hilary,” a popular Kaiso beat that energized enthusiastic fans and patrons.
The participating bands included Courts Babonneau Steel Orchestra, Pantime Steel Orchestra, Pantastic Muzik Steel Orchestra, Laborie Steel Orchestra, and Dennery Steel Orchestra. Each performed with precision, earning appreciation from a supportive crowd.
A soloist performance segment introduced exciting talents like Chazzi Desrivieres, Jessey Nurse, Omar Gabriel, and Kamins Desrivieres, adding flair to the event.
In the lead-up to Panorama, bands practiced intensively, preparing for their performances.
At the event, steel players and their crews expressed sheer joy and commitment as they took the stage, adorned in colorful attire and rolling their steel pans with pride. The stage performances were spectacular, incorporating skits that added excitement and engagement, with flag dancers and dynamic conductors elevating the displays.
Notably, one band presentation’s skit encouraged gangsters to “put down their guns and join a steel band instead,” a message that resonated deeply with the audience.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre backed this initiative, urging, “Put down the guns and take up the sticks to play steel pan.”
Creative Arts Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire addressed the challenges of developing the steel pan scene on the island. He pointed out that a steel band, consisting of around 80 members, faces significant logistical challenges over the six weeks leading up to Panorama, including providing meals, transportation, and a suitable practice environment.
“It takes a lot to prepare for Panorama, and the costs associated with clothing and maintaining properly tuned pans can impact the number of active bands,” Dr. Hilaire stated.
However, this year, the organizing committee introduced a junior segment with a Schools Steel Pan competition, creating an opportunity for younger players to develop their skills and gain invaluable stage experience. This initiative is essential for the growth of pan sides, with the Diamond Steel Orchestra from Marchand planning a comeback to compete next year.
Dr. Hilaire emphasized, “We are committed to fostering continued growth and expanding the reach of steel pan music to diverse communities across the island. There is immense talent to tap into, and we would like to showcase it on a wider scale.”
