On Saturday, August 1—Emancipation Day—the main celebrations will take place at Vieux Fort Square, featuring a special activity honoring the formerly enslaved. An enacted play depicting life on the plantations will pay homage to those individuals, continuing to reflect the country’s past while creating a pathway to the future.
This year marks the sixth edition of the Emancipation Celebration since it was re-imagined to deepen public understanding of Saint Lucia’s history and heritage.
On Friday, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) launched the Emancipation Celebration 2026, featuring an exciting program line-up in keeping with its agenda.
The month-long program will also include lectures, performances, and the much-anticipated Historical Treasure Hunt, which received enthusiastic participation last year. The CDF is dedicated to delivering a dynamic and uplifting production.
Drenia Frederick, Creative Producer at the CDF, emphasized that the media launch at Serenity Park was an exciting opportunity to honor the true essence of the occasion, inviting families, friends, and the general public to participate.
Frederick encouraged the public to, “Come with fresh flowers,” for the hosting a ‘ritual parade’ where flowers were laid out on the ocean, “allowing the tide to carry them away.”
She elaborated that this ritual symbolizes “honoring our ancestors” and serves as a remembrance of the struggles they faced in pursuit of freedom and liberation.
Frederick noted that “it was a family affair…immersing ourselves in remembering, understanding, and finding ways to chart our path to the future.”
Saint Lucians are encouraged to engage fully in these activities as “we deepen our understanding of the past and chart a resilient path towards the future.”
