Sir Neville Cenac Sent Off with State Funeral

Former Governor-General of Saint Lucia, His Excellency Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, was honored with a State Funeral at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries on Friday.

In a tribute to Sir Neville’s decades of national service, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre reflected on his extensive contributions in Parliament. The State Funeral concluded with an official period of national mourning, which featured a public lying-in-state ceremony at the House of Parliament.

Prime Minister Pierre recalled Sir Neville’s dedicated service to Saint Lucia, which spanned over five decades. His political career began in 1968 and culminated with his tenure as Governor-General from 2018 until October 2021.

Sir Neville served the nation in various capacities, including Mayor of Castries, Parliamentary Representative for Laborie, Leader of the Opposition, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and President of the Senate.

Following discussions with the family, Sir Neville was granted a State Funeral in recognition of his significant contributions to the country. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including family members, friends, dignitaries, government officials, and members of the United Workers Party (UWP), with which Sir Neville was closely associated during his political career.

On behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, Prime Minister Pierre extended condolences to Lady Julita Cenac, their children, and the entire family during this difficult time.

In an online post, the UWP expressed their sorrow, stating: “Sir Neville devoted more than five decades of service to Saint Lucia, holding positions such as Mayor of Castries, Parliamentary Representative for Laborie, Leader of the Opposition, Minister for Foreign Affairs, President of the Senate, and Governor-General.

As we reflect on his legacy, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Lady Julita Cenac, his children, family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Gone from our sight, but not from our nation’s history.”

Sir Neville Cenac’s passing has prompted reflection on a remarkable public career characterized by leadership at the highest levels of Saint Lucian politics and constitutional office. The State Funeral served as a moment of collective remembrance for national leaders, diplomatic representatives, and citizens alike.
