Vive la francophonie : French Teachers Association of Saint Lucia Hosts Inspiring Francophonie Pageant

The French Teachers Association of Saint Lucia successfully staged its first Francophonie Pageant on Thursday afternoon, showcasing a colourful celebration of language, culture and student talent.

The event, held at the Vladimir Lucien Theatre (Gros Islet), brought together secondary school students in an inspiring display of creativity, performance and cross‑cultural appreciation.

Under the leadership of President Rochelle Victor, the pageant aimed to promote linguistic diversity and cultural awareness among Saint Lucian youth.

“This initiative is more than a competition,” Victor said. “It is an opportunity for students to explore and celebrate not only the French language, but our shared heritage, identity and global interconnectedness.”

Bridging Languages and Cultures

The Francophonie Pageant highlighted the integration of Creole, English and French, reflecting the linguistic richness of Saint Lucia.

Students researched an presented on countries with this shared interconnectedness of languages including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Burkina Faso, the Seychelles, incorporating creative traditional dress, dance and storytelling to depict the history, people and customs of francophone countries around the world.

“The purpose is to encourage confidence in language learning while providing a fun platform for students to engage with cultures beyond our shores,” Victor explained. “Our young people leave here with not just new words, but new perspectives.”

Participants and Highlights Students from several schools competed in the highly anticipated event, representing countries connected to the French‑speaking world, including:
– Corinth Secondary School
– Clendon Mason Memorial Secondary School
– Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School
– Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School

Each participant presented a cultural performance inspired by their chosen francophone country. The energy on stage was met with enthusiastic support from students, teachers, family and community members.

Winners Shine Bright

After thoughtful judging, from a panel consisting of teachers, personnel from Alliance Francaise and the Embassy of France; the following students were awarded top honours:
Mr. Francophonie – Yazid Février of Clendon Mason Memorial — Best talent, Best Creative Wear, Best Introduction
Ms. Francophonie – Petanya Thomas of Corinth Secondary School — Best Talent, Best Creative Wear

Students from the participating schools were applauded for their exceptional stage presence, linguistic ability and creative interpretation of their chosen cultures.

Their performances stood out for originality, confidence and mastery of both French and cultural storytelling.

An Event with Lasting Impact Teachers and judges noted the positive impact the Francophonie Pageant has on student confidence, language skills and cultural understanding. For many participants, the event deepened their interest in French and inspired them to continue exploring diverse global identities.

One teacher shared, “This pageant gives students a chance to express themselves in ways the classroom alone can’t always provide. They are learning about language and how important their perspectives are to the world.”
