Tapion Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) to its growing list of advanced diagnostic services. This specialized cardiac imaging technology represents another step forward in the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
A Transesophageal Echocardiogram, commonly referred to as TEE, is a diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound technology to produce detailed images of the heart. Unlike a standard echocardiogram, which captures images from outside the chest, a TEE involves inserting a small ultrasound probe into the esophagus. Because the esophagus lies directly behind the heart, this approach allows physicians to obtain clearer and more precise images of the heart’s structures and function.
The enhanced imaging provided by TEE enables cardiologists to more accurately evaluate conditions affecting the heart valves, chambers, and surrounding structures. It is particularly valuable in detecting blood clots, infections of the heart valves, congenital heart abnormalities such as the common, hole in the heart and other complex cardiac conditions that may not be as easily identified through traditional imaging techniques.
“The introduction of Transesophageal Echocardiography significantly enhances our ability to diagnose complex cardiac conditions,” said Dr. Romel Daniel, Cardiologist and Internist at Tapion Hospital. “By providing clearer and more detailed images of the heart, this technology allows physicians to make more informed clinical decisions and develop more effective treatment plans for patients.”
Dr. Kurlene Cenac, Cardiologist and Internist at Tapion Hospital expressed satisfaction in knowing that patients will no longer have to travel to neighboring islands to identify these potentially life altering medical conditions but instead will be diagnosed right here at home in Saint Lucia, thus guiding their further care. “We are extremely grateful that we finally have the necessary equipment to put long acquired knowledge and expertise to use for the benefit of our patients,” she said.
Since introducing the service on February 27, 2026, Tapion Hospital has already performed TEE procedures for two patients. As awareness of this diagnostic option grows, the hospital anticipates that more patients will benefit from this important addition to its cardiac services.
The introduction of Transesophageal Echocardiography reflects Tapion Hospital’s ongoing dedication to expanding its medical capabilities and providing access to modern, reliable, and comprehensive healthcare services.
