Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre

During the recent Ease of Doing Business (EODB) Forum, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the business environment in Saint Lucia.

He revealed that the insights gathered from the EODB Forum will serve as a blueprint for the upcoming Budget Policy Statement, scheduled for presentation on April 24.

Engaging with leaders from the private sector, PM Pierre discussed actionable reforms aimed at streamlining regulations, reducing bureaucratic hurdles, and fostering economic growth. This forum is part of Saint Lucia’s broader strategy to attract investment, boost entrepreneurship, and enhance competitiveness within the Caribbean region.

“Some of the issues discussed here will be implemented in the Policy Statement,” he stated.

Addressing attendees, PM Pierre acknowledged concerns regarding the perception of political interference within the private sector but affirmed that his administration prioritizes collaboration with businesses.

“This government will always listen to the private sector,” he emphasized. “If you examine the legislation passed in this country, you will see that most facilitating private sector expansion and development has been enacted by our government.”

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire, this initiative represents the government’s ongoing efforts to respond to business concerns and enhance the investment climate.

Discussions during the forum focused on reducing bureaucratic barriers, improving efficiency in key agencies, and advancing practical solutions to support entrepreneurship and attract investment. The engagement reflects the government’s dedication to partnering with the private sector to cultivate a more responsive, business-friendly economy that fosters growth and opportunity.

Commerce Minister Dr. Hilaire addressed the need for structural permanence and announced the establishment of a dedicated unit to support businesses across the island.

“We will set up a Business Facilitation Unit at the Department of Commerce, responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Ease of Doing Business agenda,” he said.

Additionally, Dr. Hilaire proposed reactivating an EODB Task Force, comprising representatives from both the private and public sectors, to foster a collaborative partnership.

“Let’s reinstate the Task Force to monitor our initiatives,” he added.
