The Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Millennium Highway & West Coast Road Reconstruction Project has addressed recent incidents involving two vehicles entering an open trench along the Cul-de-SacRoad.
The first incident occurred on the evening of January 6, 2026, and the second in the early hours of January 7, 2026. These incidents occurred on Lot 2A of the Project, for which the contractor is Namalco Construction Services Limited.
The PMU says commuter safety remains paramount across all phases of the Project. Contractors operating along the corridor are contractually obligated to properly secure hazard-prone areas, including the installation and maintenance of barricades, reflectors, and other traffic-management devices. The PMU says it actively monitors compliance with these requirements to safeguard road users.
Following preliminary assessments of the January incidents, the PMU has confirmed that, in both cases, the affected trench areas were barricaded at the time. However, as the incidents occurred during low-light hours, the adequacy of visibility—particularly the effectiveness of reflective and warning elements—has been identified as an area requiring further review. The PMU has engaged the contractor to assess and strengthen night-time visibility measures where necessary.
The PMU also emphasizes the shared responsibility of motorists traveling through an active road construction corridor. Drivers have also been urged to exercise heightened vigilance, adhere to reduced speed signage, and remain alert. Speeding or inattentive driving significantly reduces a motorist’s ability to detect and respond safely to obstructions or hazards, especially at night.
The Project Management Unit reiterated that it remains committed to continuous review and improvement of safety measures and will continue to work closely with contractors to ensure that public safety remains the highest priority as construction progresses.
