Reports confirm that individuals have engaged in the reprehensible act of stealing bricks from the 18th and 19th-century tombs at the historic British Military Cemetery at Morne Fortune.
In a strong statement on its Facebook page, an SLNT official declared, “The Saint Lucia National Trust is deeply distressed and vehemently condemns the serious damage inflicted by these acts of theft. The British and French Cemeteries at Morne Fortune are vital components of our history and heritage, serving as poignant reminders of the British and French colonial influence that has shaped our island nation.”
The Trust demands that those responsible for these destructive activities cease immediately and return all stolen bricks to the cemetery to facilitate the restoration of these important tombs.
Additionally, the SLNT calls on the public to take action by promptly reporting any damage to Saint Lucia’s historic sites, monuments, and structures to the Trust.
The St. Lucia National Trust has been charged with the responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the island’s major historic sites.
