This week, the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc., in collaboration with FIFA, held a crucial two-day workshop dedicated to analyzing the structure of amateur football and its global development.

The workshop took place from January 20 to 21 at the Bel Jou Hotel, Castries focusing on the Amateur Football Environment Analysis (AFEA). The session emphasized collaborative growth, technical development, and strategic support.

SLFA leadership, technical staff, and league representatives engaged actively in discussions aimed at strengthening the local football scene. Two FIFA experts Jurgen Nepfer and David Abdul provided attendees, including SLFA staff, league affiliates, and other stakeholders, with essential insights into strategic development for the advancement of the ‘beautiful game.’

On Tuesday, the SLFA hosted FIFA representatives who presented on AFEA, followed by discussions among SLFA’s executive committee, technical staff, coaches, and representatives of the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League (SPFL) on Wednesday.

SLFA President Lyndon Cooper highlighted the importance of these workshops for keeping participants informed about the latest trends in football development.

“Less than 98% of individuals who play football are amateurs; this shows how significant the amateur scene is, and Saint Lucia is no exception,” he emphasized.

“With the introduction of the Semi-Professional Football League, we have a clear directive to ensure that we fulfill all requirements as we progress from semi-professional to fully professional football,” Cooper stated decisively.

He underscored the vital role of stakeholders in promoting the sport: “They form the backbone of our football structure, enabling the game to grow through consultation and collaboration.”

The focus of the FIFA experts on AFEA was critical, as it assessed and aimed to strengthen grassroots football development. The sessions pinpointed essential structural, cultural, and operational factors that influence amateur football, providing a foundation for strategic planning and sustainable growth.

By evaluating local challenges and opportunities, the workshop empowers the SLFA to align national initiatives with FIFA’s global standards. The insights gathered are set to inform future programs, enhance player development, and elevate the infrastructure and governance at the amateur level.

The workshop facilitator recalled that Saint Lucia launched the Semi-Professional Football League (SPFL) two years ago and is now in its third season, with clear plans to advance to professional football standards. It was reiterated that key stakeholders are crucial to the overall development of football on the island.

During the workshop, Nepfer stressed the importance of the Global Report presented by FIFA. They elaborated on grassroots football and its diverse structures within FIFA member associations.

FIFA’s video footage stated, “We have conducted extensive research into the Global Football ecosystem, allowing us to act on facts. This is why our programs are specifically tailored to provide the best support possible.”

On High Performance: “The Talent Development Scheme is designed to ensure every talent has an opportunity by supporting member associations in creating long-term strategies focused on developing elite young players.”

Additionally, “Each participating member association can apply for financial support for projects, with FIFA’s team of high-performance specialists ready to guide them in making informed decisions.”

Moreover, “FIFA talent coaches are actively assisting member associations across all continents in developing high-quality academies dedicated to nurturing players with the potential to excel on the national stage.”

On Amateur Football: “Amateur football represents the largest segment of football played globally, which is why FIFA conducted the Amateur Football Environment Analysis—its most comprehensive research to date on the amateur scene.”

Furthermore, “The Global Report is being published, and country-specific reports will be presented to each member association. Together with member associations and key stakeholders, we are committed to advancing the game for everyone.”

Key Aspects of the Workshop:

Focus: Amateur Football Environment Analysis (AFEA) aimed at fostering growth and collaboration.

Goal: Develop a road-map to support amateur football in Saint Lucia, aligning with FIFA’s global development goals for talent, coaching, and infrastructure.
