Motorists in the south have renewed their calls for their colleagues to drive with due care and attention, following multiple vehicular accidents in Vieux-Fort on Friday, January 9, 2026.
One of the accidents claimed the life of a female driver.
Motorists in the south want the authorities to put the brakes on reckless driving in order to reduce the number of road fatalities in Vieux-fort.
The flagrant violation of traffic regulations in Vieux-Fort can be seen on a daily basis, especially by young motorists. They can be seen weaving in and out of traffic, risking dangerous maneuvers at high speed.
Vice president of the National Council on Public Transportation (NCOPT), Peter Richard said: “Something needs to be done now to deal with the problem. It is getting out of hand.”
According to him, an increase in traffic fines for certain traffic offences will help reduce the number of road fatalities on the highways in Vieux-Fort. He said it will serve as a deterrent to dangerous driving.
Richard, a former police officer, is calling for more traffic officers to patrol the highways in Vieux-Fort.
Alexis Louisy said: “What is happening on our roads is ridiculous. Some motorists are not placing any value on human lives.”
He identified the main culprits as young motorists who just want to show off.
Cris Taylor said: “There are many mad drivers on our roads. Some of them are not fit to drive a vehicle.”
According to him, to some young motorists, if you can’t drive at excessive speed, you’re not a good driver.
“In some cases, the consumption of alcohol is the cause of road fatalities in Vieux-Fort. We need to crack down on those motorists who drive their vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
