In response to the recent US military intervention in the Caribbean, the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association (SLCFA) has issued a powerful statement condemning the latest aggressive actions against Cuba.

On the 173rd anniversary of the birth of Cuba’s National Hero, José Martí, and in the year marking the centenary of the birth of the Eternal Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the SLCFA expresses profound outrage over the steps taken by Washington to further punish and isolate Cuba, aiming to starve its population into submission.

This latest move seeks to create even more inhumane conditions for Cuba’s 11 million people, particularly following the tragic loss of 32 soldiers in the invasion of Venezuela on January 3, 2026. The decision to impose yet another blockade, on top of the existing measures that have persisted for the past 63 years, is alarming.

This time, the objective appears to be to plunge Cuba into perpetual darkness, crippling the nation’s energy supply and basic needs. The blockade of Cuba’s oil imports from Venezuela, Mexico, and other traditionally allied nations represents a continuation of US efforts to create an internal environment where any public dissent is directed at the government in Havana, rather than at the real source of the crisis.

The SLCFA urges the US administration to halt its ongoing punitive policies against the Cuban people, who have consistently supported their revolution and resisted decades of solicitation and provocation to undermine their democratically elected leaders, from Presidents Fidel and Raúl Castro to the current President Manuel Diaz Canel.

We call upon solidarity organizations across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the world to affirm their commitment to defend Cuba’s right to self-determination and respect for its sovereignty—particularly against foreign attempts at regime change.

The SLCFA looks forward to seeing Cuba’s friends worldwide not only opposing but actively challenging the illegal blockade disrupting essential oil imports vital for maintaining basic human needs, including keeping hospitals operational.

We believe that global solidarity remains as strong as ever, and the SLCFA anticipates continuing expressions of Caribbean opposition against this new naval blockade aimed at forcing desperation upon Cuba’s population.

Finally, we reaffirm our deep appreciation for Cuba’s ongoing assistance, especially in the realms of healthcare and education, despite increasingly challenging circumstances. We celebrate the spirit of solidarity shared between Cuba and its Caribbean Brothers and Sisters in Saint Lucia and beyond. Long Live Cuba!

Long Live Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship and Solidarity!

Issued by the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association January 28, 2026.
