Hotel developers in the northern zone of the island, particularly regarding Mount Pimard Beach Park, issued a statement to clarify the dispute or provide alternative arrangements for the proprietors of Marie’s Fish Shack.

The Department of Crown Lands, in cooperation with the Government of Saint Lucia, acknowledges the public concern regarding the location and future of Marie’s Fish Shack at Reduit Beach.

The developers state clearly that : “We recognize the establishment’s deep community ties and understand its significance. In our commitment to transparency and constructive engagement, we aim to clarify the context surrounding the Mount Pimard Beach Park development and the considerations influencing decision-making at this time.”

Marie’s Fish Shack, a prominent establishment at the southern end of Reduit Beach, has contributed significantly to the local community.

However, it is crucial to emphasize that the business operates unofficially on state-owned lands, an area currently undergoing substantial development to enhance the national tourism product and bolster the broader Saint Lucian economy.

The release adds , “While we acknowledge the establishment’s long-standing presence and community value, compliance with the legal framework governing the use of state-owned lands is non-negotiable.

“The Crown Lands Act mandates that all individuals and enterprises wishing to occupy or conduct activities on Crown Land, including along the Kings’ Chain, obtain approval from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, regardless of the duration of their occupation.”

To this end, Invest Saint Lucia proactively engaged with the developer of A’ILA Resort to construct Mount Pimard Beach Park, fully considering the future operations of Marie’s in the earliest park design renderings, which include a dedicated fish restaurant.

Furthermore, the design is meticulously crafted to integrate Saint Lucian entrepreneurs eager to participate in this initiative. The actions implemented by the Government do not amount to an eviction.

Instead, they involve relocating operations to an upgraded site on the same beach, featuring enhanced amenities such as dedicated parking, security, sanitation, recreational areas, bathroom and shower facilities, dining spaces, a playground, and expanded commercial opportunities for the entire community.

A spokesperson for Mount Pimard stated, “We urge the public to reflect on all legal obligations that the Government must uphold while recognizing the support extended to local entrepreneurs. It’s vital for all stakeholders to understand that, despite our admiration for Marie’s contributions and our desire for her continued success, compliance with the law is essential to cultivate a fair business environment for all.”

The statement concludes, “We also encourage individuals actively engaging in activities along the Kings’ Chain to consult with the Department of Crown Lands to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.”
