
On Carnival Monday, a fatal stabbing in the Vigie area resulted in the shocking death of former national footballer Sherman Augustin, just 22 years old.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. Warnings have been issued regarding the circumstances surrounding this incident,which reportedly occurred early Monday morning, as investigations are currently underway.
While reports indicate that this tragedy cast a shadow over the Carnival celebrations, the festivities continued unabated well past 7:00 p.m. The Saint Lucian football community is in deep mourning over the loss of another young life.
Sherman was regarded as a ‘rising star’ and displayed immense promise as he ascended through the ranks of national representation for Saint Lucia. He showcased his skills with the Saint Lucia National Senior Men’s team in the Nations League and played for Gros Islet DL in the Saint Lucia Semi-Pro Football League [SPFL] and Grenades FC in Antigua.
Details surrounding the stabbing remain unclear, but police are actively investigating the matter and are expected to disclose additional information as their inquiries progress.
The Saint Lucia Football Association Inc. extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the entire football community devastated by Sherman Augustin’s tragic death.
According to a SLFA spokesperson, Sherman, a dedicated midfielder, proudly represented GMC with relentless passion and determination. He went on to make significant contributions to Gros Islet Football League in the SLFA Inc.’s Senior Men’s domestic competition and enjoyed a stellar presence in the semi-professional league.
His exemplary performances included four appearances for the Senior National football team in the Concacaf Nations League in 2024.
National Assistant Coach Francis “Baba” Lastic remembers Sherman as a hardworking individual who prioritized the team.
Indeed, he was a star on the rise.
In September 2022, he joined Grenades FC of Antigua. Club President Chester Hughes highlighted Sherman’s impact, stating he brought pride, passion, and power to the midfield and was instrumental in leading the team to their historic 2022/23 league title.
THe SLFA added , “Sherman’s passion for the game was undeniable; every time he donned the national colors, he did so with pride and dignity. His absence will be profoundly felt, and once again, the SLFA Inc. extends sympathies to the football community for this tragic loss. He was taken too soon.”
