The Taiwanese government is fulfilling its commitment to assist Saint Lucia in enhancing its community support initiatives.
In a recent ceremony, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs received a substantial donation of mobility and support equipment from the Republic of China (Taiwan). This event gathered key stakeholders from various government sectors, including representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Crime Prevention and Persons with Disabilities, and the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment.
It underscored a unified commitment to inclusivity, independence, and dignity for individuals living with disabilities.
During the ceremony, the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Saint Lucia, Her Excellency Nicole Su, expressed her pride in Taiwan’s ongoing partnership with Saint Lucia. She emphasized that this donation reflects the strong bonds of friendship and a mutual vision for empowering all citizens.
“This Taiwanese NGO has consistently offered timely assistance to those in need, particularly to persons with disabilities,” Ambassador Su stated. “My government proudly continues its partnership in this goodwill operation for the third consecutive year, ensuring that these essential goods are delivered to Saint Lucia.”
Ambassador Su announced the donation of 120 wheelchairs for adults, 25 for children, 40 commode chairs, 80 aluminum walkers, and 100 aluminum canes to Saint Lucia.
Minister for Home Affairs, Crime Prevention and Persons with Disabilities, Jeremiah Norbert, emphasized that this donation, which includes crucial mobility aids, marks a historic milestone for the Department of Persons with Disabilities.
This is the first official donation the department has received, and it carries profound significance.
“Since the establishment of our department, individuals have consistently sought assistance, frequently asking, ‘Where can I get a wheelchair?’ This need has been a daily occurrence,” Norbert stated. “Thus, this donation transcends mere generosity; it aligns perfectly with our mandate to restore dignity, enhance accessibility, and cultivate an environment where persons with disabilities can confidently navigate their lives.”
Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, Moses Jn Baptiste, conveyed his gratitude to the government and people of Taiwan for their unwavering support.
“The donation of mobility devices and wheelchairs is of paramount importance,” he affirmed. He echoed Minister Norbert’s sentiments regarding the donation’s significance, asserting, “It empowers our people, instilling greater confidence as they navigate their daily activities and reinforces their sense of independence.”
Minister Jn Baptiste firmly believes that this donation will enable recipients to achieve a greater sense of accomplishment and autonomy in their lives.
The provision of mobility and support equipment is poised to significantly enhance the daily lives of recipients, enabling them to engage more fully in their communities and lead independent lives.
