CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Rising chess talent D’yorni Cilpa of St. Mary’s College emerged victorious at the FIDE 101st Birthday Rapid Chess Tournament, held in celebration of International Chess Day.
The six-round over-the-board event brought together a dozen strategic minds, but it was Cilpa who outmaneuvered the field, claiming the top spot on tiebreak after a thrilling final round.
Terence Lindo of D’Lion Chess Club matched Cilpa in points but narrowly missed the title, settling for a commendable second place. Anu Leonce, representing UWI, rounded out the top three with a strong showing of consistency and tactical play.
Organized as part of global efforts to commemorate the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the tournament offered young and experienced players alike a platform to showcase their skill, endurance, and sportsmanship.

The event not only highlighted the growing enthusiasm for chess in Saint Lucia but also reinforced the game’s value in sharpening minds and fostering discipline.
Kudos to all 12 participants who demonstrated true chess spirit and made the tournament a success. Special congratulations to our top three finishers — especially champion D’yorni Cilpa — for making their mark on the board and writing a new chapter in local chess history.
♟ Happy International Chess Day!
