Windies Women’s Rugby Team Excels at Tropical 7s Rugby Tournament

Four talented Saint Lucians featured on the West Indies Women’s Rugby team, which showcased their skill and determination by finishing second in the Elite Division of the prestigious Tropical 7s Rugby Tournament in Tampa, Florida, over the Easter weekend.

In a fiercely contested final against the Canada-based McDowell Academy, the team put forth a courageous effort but ultimately fell short with a 26-19 scoreline.

Notable members from Saint Lucia included Mary Roberts, Shammah Philgence, Renetta Fredricks-Reynolds, and assistant coach Chantal John, whose contributions brought immense pride to their island nation and highlighted Saint Lucia’s burgeoning talent in the sport.

The full West Indies squad represented a powerful blend of Caribbean pride and unity, drawing athletes from Saint Lucia, Bermuda, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Canada and the USA.

Under the leadership of Captain Veronica Blair from Jamaica/New Jersey and Vice-Captain Leah Kintiba from Trinidad and Tobago, the team epitomized the strength of regional collaboration and camaraderie.

The Tropical 7s tournament, known for its high level of competition, saw the West Indies women’s team decisively outperform several rivals to secure their silver medal.

Their unwavering dedication and teamwork led to a captivating performance that resonated with fans and made a significant impact on the rugby community.
