ILE Dominique has been named the GIMIES People’s Choice! After months of online voting, the Food & Beverage Boat Vendor operating on Sugar Beach in Soufriere has emerged the most relatable person in the tourism industry through popular voting. Known for his kindness, creativity, and genuine personality, his impact has had a ripple effect throughout the community. He has become a beloved fixture at the beach, drawing both locals and tourists alike, with his unique concoctions often inspired by the vibrant tropical fruits and rums found on the island.
As the GIMIES celebrates service excellence at all levels, it has given a platform for many unsung heroes like ILe and his fellow top three colleagues Marva Williams, Tours Supervisor, SRDF and Alvin Fanis, Proprietor, ATV Direct to be highlighted for their contributions to the sector. Accepting the award, ILe thanked his supporters with “manners and respect,” expressing his desire to continue spreading joy through his craft. He hopes to use this platform to inspire others to pursue their passions and give back to their communities in meaningful ways. His infectious smile and passion for blending the perfect smoothie while giving a history lesson of the island, has made Saint Lucia’s resident “Burna Boy lookalike” a household name. According to the Permanent Secretary in the Tourism, Investment Creative Industries, Culture and Information, Ms. Donalyn Vittet, “I’m excited for the future of the tourism industry. Now more than ever have we seen enterprising individuals stepping out and showing up in our globally recognized island. We are on the cusp of something great, as Saint Lucia continues to gain recognition for the hard work, new developments and aid of innovative minds, eager to raise the bar of excellence every time”.
Another small business owner Denise Nelson, the innovative mind behind InstaComfort, received the GIMIE for Youth in Tourism. As an international luxury travel and concierge service provider, she and her team work assiduously to enhance the travel experience for their guests, even before arriving on the island. Euphoric at the news, Denise acknowledged the challenges young people face when entering any industry but gave kudos to her team, family and industry stakeholders who provided advice and the tools which aided her in navigating the very competitive environment.
Many new and first-time candidates also received accolades on the night. Panoramic Excursions walked away with the Land Based Transport Business of the Year & Tourism Innovation Award. Offering guests a bird’s eye view of the landscape atop double decker buses, the small business has seen significant growth through its new approach to touring.
