The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) joins the global community in recognizing World Water Day on March 22, 2025, under the theme “Glacier Protection”. This year’s theme highlights the urgent need to safeguard the world’s glaciers, which play a critical role in global water supply and climate stability. While Saint Lucia is not home to glaciers, the melting of these ice masses has far-reaching consequences, including rising sea levels and shifting weather patterns that can directly impact the island’s water resources.
As one of Saint Lucia’s water stewards, WASCO is committed to promoting climate resilience and water conservation. To mark this occasion, WASCO is launching several initiatives designed to educate, inform, and encourage collective action to protect water resources.
Key Activities for World Water Day 2025 include
Public Awareness and Education:
WASCO’s new documentary “Saint Lucia’s Water Journey” will air on local stations before the nightly news in the lead-up to World Water Day, offering insight into the island’s water management system and climate challenges.
Media appearances including ‘Issues and Answers’ on GIS with WASCO Management.
Dissemination of information and WASCO documentary through The Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association’s newsletters.
Social Media Sensitization & Quiz: WASCO will engage the public through a series of posts throughout the week and an online quiz, testing knowledge on Saint Lucia’s water system and conservation efforts, with prizes for winners.
Educational Outreach: Schools and key stakeholders, including the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, will receive information on water conservation, climate adaptation, and access to the documentary for sensitization purposes.
Internal Awareness: Critical information will be shared with WASCO staff, who will also participate in an internal quiz competition to enhance their knowledge of water management and climate resilience.
A Call for Collective Action
“As Saint Lucia faces increasing climate challenges, water security is a shared responsibility,” said Dainea Stevens, WASCO’s Corporate Communications Manager. “Through education and public engagement, we can all contribute to protecting this vital resource.”
WASCO encourages the public to conserve water, stay informed on climate impacts, and support sustainability initiatives.
