In a sterling display of community solidarity, the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment, in partnership with the Babonneau Constituency Council and the Babonneau Police Station, has stepped in to make a meaningful difference in the life of Conon Sealy, an 80-year-old resident of Fond Assau, Babonneau.
Mr. Sealy, who lives alone, was found to be in dire social conditions, with his health rapidly declining and his living environment in desperate need of care. Recognizing the urgency of his situation, the Ministry’s Community Development/Social Transformation Unit spearheaded an intervention aimed at addressing his most pressing needs.
On March 10, a team comprising social workers, police officers, and constituency representatives mobilized to assist Mr. Sealy. His immediate need for medical attention was prioritized, and he was escorted to the wellness center for a thorough check-up. Simultaneously, efforts commenced to clean and improve his home and surroundings, ensuring that he would live in a healthier and more dignified environment.
Social Transformation Officer for the Babonneau Region, Darnally Estava, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This is both a social outreach and a community development effort in collaboration with the Babonneau Police and the Constituency Council. While our immediate focus is on ensuring Mr. Sealy’s comfort and well-being, we are also looking toward a long-term solution. Plans are in place to relocate him to a newly constructed residential unit in the Conway area, allowing him to live in a more suitable environment.”
Acting Sergeant of Police at the Babonneau Police Station, Glen Charlery, underscored the commitment of law enforcement to community welfare, beyond crime-fighting.
“With the full support of the Commissioner of Police, we are proud to be part of this initiative. Policing goes beyond law enforcement—we want to be seen as partners in community development. This is a meaningful way for us to engage with the community and show that we care for the well-being of our residents, particularly our elderly.”
Deputy Chairperson of the Babonneau Constituency Council, Mildred Joseph, highlighted the significance of giving back to those who have contributed to their communities.
“Mr. Sealy just celebrated his 80th birthday, and we felt it was the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation and support. Community service is about more than sitting behind a desk—it’s about going out, meeting people where they are, and making a real impact. Through this collaboration, we were able to give him not just a home makeover but also a renewed sense of belonging.”
This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing the social challenges faced by the most vulnerable members of society. The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment remains committed to fostering stronger communities through targeted interventions that uplift and empower individuals in need.
